Our History

Waste Solutions can trace our heritage back to 1971 when a group of environmental research scientists within the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture were tasked with evaluating the environmental effects of a new Aluminium smelter near Invercargill, New Zealand.

A few years later, as a direct consequence of the oil crisis of 1973, we started researching natural energy options and developed an experimental anaerobic digester which for a time, in the late 70’s, provided biogas fuel to a small fleet of Ministry vehicles. In our early days the focus was on improving anaerobic digestion and production of biogas and but we soon had to diversify.

Fuelling up with Biogas

In the late 70’s and 80’s the oil prices were low and stable and public and corporate interest in alternative fuel sources waned. Being part of government we retained our scientific approach but alongside this we also found ourselves diversifying into general industrial and municipal wastewater treatment and we became, and still are, heavily involved with traditional wastewater treatment.

Waste Solutions as part of CPG New Zealand

In 1993 the New Zealand Government sold Waste Solutions to the forward thinking consulting engineering firm, Duffill Watts, now CPG New Zealand. The investments into research and product development continued but we also gained the engineering, construction and planning skills of CPG.

The last seven years have seen circumstances change rapidly. Due to the heightened, global awareness of the environment and sustainable energy we find our skills and experience in the field of turning waste into energy are in great demand and we are currently expanding our operations around the world.
